Nutrition and Herbal Therapy for Cancer
Until now, cancer has become a threat, while specific medicine to stop the development of cancer cells has not found yet. On the other hand, the research to find alternative medicine for breast cancer is still going on. However, the preventive efforts are still going on by using radiation and cytostatica therapy.
But some of cancer patients prefer to choose alternative therapy. To measure the benefits and risks of alternative therapy, including food supplement usage (antioxydan substances and mineral vitamin) and herbalpreparate that can runs against the cancer.
Many types of cancer have proven contain anti-cancer substances. Even a dish consisted of brocooli, mustard green, cauliflower, carrot, tomatoes, and fish flesh; is rich of antioxydan elements.
Many circumstance substances such as alil sulfida in onion, curcumine in turmeric, isaflavon in soy bean, licofen in tomato, polifenol in green tea, revesratrol in the skin of red wine fruit, and sulforafan in brocooli can be defined as foods that could prevent cancer. Some vitamins and minerals are also antioxydan that often promoted to prevent cancer, such as : beta-karoten, vitamin C, E, and selenium.

Cancer will be emerged if normal DNA cells are damaged, so it will cause genetic mutation. If it is not immediately being corrected, cells development of those damaged DNA will potentially cause cell cancer. In fact, cell’s mutation is aimed to recover damaged cells.
From nutrition science side, two elements that can damage normal DNA cells are free radical and carcinogen. Free radical can be produced from body’s metabolism or from environment around us (gas emission from factories and vehicles, cigarette smoke, chemical substances such as insecticide, chemical substances or additive substances in food). Fortunately, free radical can be tied and neutralized by some substances, vitamin and mineral with its nature antioxydan.
While some antioxydan substances that are able to neutralize free radical are polifenol (green tea), licofen (tomatoes), beta-karotin (carrot), and some substances in the vegetables or fruits.
For licofen in tomatoes, this substance is hardly tied with those fruit fibers. To release it, tomatoes must be cooked first by using a little oil, considering licofen nature that is easy to get disolved in the oil.
Harvard University researched to 48.000 people in 1995 showed that people who consumed meal that contained tomatoes; 10 times per week will decrease the risk in getting prostate cancer until almost half of them. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium that can be found in fruits, vegetables, aprout, and grains, will also be antioxydan that will neutralize free radical.
The second element is carcinogen substance in the food. This substance is actually coming from procarcinogen that is changed by The First Phase Enzym in liver to become carcinogen. Meanwhile, The Second Phase Enzym will release wastes of The First Phase Enzym products, so it can hamper the forming of cancer cells. If The First Phase Enzym can be named as the evil enzym, so The Second Phase Enzym can be named as the good enzym.
The first phase enzym is actually able to be hampered by alil sulfida substances in the onion so can decrease the change of procarcinogen to be carcinogen. One of the famous carcinogen example is nitrosamin substances resulted from fish/meat toasting (such as toasted satay) and the waste of frying oil that has been used for many times. Vitamin C has a role as antioxydan that hampers the formation of nitrosamin in the digestion tract.
While The Second Phase Enzym products can be increased by sulforafan that is easily found in brocooli, cauliflower, and mustard green. Therefore, the vegetable ingredient that consists of a dish of brocooli, aprout, cauliflower, carrot, tomatoes, and fish; with a little oil and onion is one of choosen menu which is rich of antioxydan elements.
