Key to Success of IBM: Exploration and Education
International Business Machine (IBM) is a successful American multinational technology company. IBM was founded on June 16, 1911 and this year is held a celebration of 100 years with the headline “IBM’s Centennial: 1911, 2011, 2111″.
During the year 2011, IBM travel around the world, visiting college, campuses to hold public lectures that discuss about technological developments that occurred during the past 100 years, then open the panel discussion to talk about what technology will happen in the next 100 years.
IBM with its Centennial IBM program has held a public lecture courses in various countries, namely at the John Hopkins University, Indian Institute of Science, Lee Kuan Yeuw School of Public Policy, Tongji University, Warsaw School of Economics, University of Tokyo, and several other.universities at one public lecture presented by Michael E. Daniels, Senior Vice President and Group Executive, Services, IBM Corporation, Michael highlights three important points that occurred in the history of 100 years of IBM. Three points are the nature and implications of technology, how to walk with the IBM technology development adopted by humans, and how the founder of IBM run his leadership.
The other thing is that Michael made in the course of 100 years, IBM does not only focus on the development of technology, but also thinks about environmental problems. IBM has been doing various cooperation with several companies and government to develop technologies in the areas of health, agriculture, and marine.
Cooperation in the field of marine, IBM cooperates with Marina Institute. The technology is developed to be able to detect the state of the beach, the ocean, and the possibilities of damage that will occur. The technology is named Atutomatic Identification System Technology (AIS Technology). This cooperation produced SmartBay project, which began running since 2006 and serves as an integrated system for observation and marine research in large volumes.
IBM’s cooperation in agriculture is with the Ministry of Agriculture of United States Government. IBM helped the development of Cacao Genome Project, which aims to preserve the chocolate plantation around the world, so that the production of chocolate keep going on without damaging the environment.
For businesses based environment, IBM is also working with Columbia University to prepare students to build a business that can help sustainable life. Students are given training and provided with facilities to make research about the building of infrastructure, electricity, and transportation systems on the basis of living green (environmentally friendly).
In the health sector, IBM is working with the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute to develop analytical system that help doctors understand the problems suffered by patients.
“IBM’s goal is to build a smarter planet by utilizing technology to solve various problems of human life,” said Michael.
In addition to a variety of partnership, IBM also has built a global incubator for startup parafounder. The project named the IBM Global Entrepreneur provides access to startup founder to network with fellow founder of another startup company, training, mentoring, IT services, and business consulting.
” Key to Success of IBM is the deep exploration and profound education. So the next 100 years, we will still do the same to continue what we started. In any recruitment, we will give priority to the education and skill of exploration possessed by prospective employees, “said Michael.
Michael said, “I want to quote the word of the founder of IBM that successful people are those who do not stop to think.”
